03:36 am - And so I return, again...

I decided to find all the stuff I've written down and I realized that time really does make things seem better than they are.

Spent 3 hours just tracking down all the revisions and figuring out which ones are the newest. So far I've managed to find:
-A Mutation fic
-1 page of Haiku
-4 structured poems in various states of disrepair
-A story outline with 6 parts and only 2 finished
-The opening scene for Duty and Delusion
-A short vampire story in a cyberpunk setting
-A scene set in a nomad's tent
-A Fanfic based on Mercedes Lackey's Velgarth setting
-A folder of character sheets for stories that I haven't even started
-Maybe one or two decent pieces

11:08 pm - Writer's Block: The Undead

With Halloween on the horizon, burning questions about the undead need to be answered: Can being a zombie be considered suffering?

Can something without a mind suffer? Science gives an emphatic no where some religions have allowances for suffering where there is no mind even possible. Since we are not considering zombies created by hypnotic/subconscious suggestions, we will need to allow the viewpoint of religion.

Without arguing the nature of suffering, the unthinking hordes of shuffling bodies could be considered to suffer if you allow that spirits exist and if the spirit is tied to the body after the process of entering the realm of unlife. If this is true, that may also apply to the donated organs of the recently deceased. What about those that donated multiple organs; Is their spirit stretched or sundered in order to occupy all their still leaving tissue? If the spirit is broken, stretch or torn from its proper place, that would definitely cause suffering, whether it would be felt by the zombie is another issue.

If, according to some religions, a place or object is entitled to a spirit by varying criteria, then a zombie may have a spirit separate of its host. Where would this spirit come from? Is it the spirit of another possessing the body, is the spirit created when the corpse begins to move or a combination. Being the submissive spirit may be a form of suffering., especially if they were the previous inhabitant.

I would say that in order to conclude that zombies can experience suffering, one would need to determine whether zombies do have spirits and whether the spirits are able to receive feedback from the undead shell.

Questions are the seeds for the love of knowledge and the flesh of the fruits of that tree sustains the spirit only long enough to wait for another seed to bear fruit. Knowledge, for those unable and unwilling to break free of its grasp, is a dangerous and lifelong addiction.

So Kotei '08 came and went. Did better this year than last 3-3.
Wins:
Aaron Simpson : Lion Toolbox
Akodo Kan-Yu : Lion Tactician
3rd Win I can't remember at all. Teach me to wait to post.

Losses:
Josh Gaydos : Mantis Attach/Shoot
Mitch : Crab Duelling
Noah the Wanderer : Lion Tactician?

Spirit: Only 3 of us this year. A Crane, Scorpion and Phoenix. Scorpion won and I tied w/ the phoenix.

Notes for next time: A Crane's strength sucks with 2 PH, use Draw Your Blade instead

It's the year of the rat and I'm getting white hairs, at my age! Well, only 3 so far.

I can't be arsed to pluck them though.

So it's Rat at the Movies time again. This time it's "The Secretary" and "Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight"

So, The Secretary.

Long story short, it's about a girl with self infliction problems that gets out of the institution, has to get on with her life and gets a job. The boss is a neurotic with his own problems. There's a bit of kinky stuff, but it's not that kind of movie.

Personally I found the acting stilted and lacking, but it may just be that they were acting their characters too well. If you're into D/s I'd say it's worth a rental or some bandwidth, otherwise I'd pass.

Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight

Does anyone remember the hobbit and the lord of the rings animated movies? Yeah, add some CG and you've got the quality level for this movie. The only CG parts are fire, dragons and draconians. It probably would've been cheaper if they outsourced the animation completely to someplace like Korea and would be better quality.

As with any adaption, whole sections were ripped out, some of them important. There are some innacuracies as well, like the Qualinesti don't live in trees, they make their buildings out of quartz-like crystal.

Finally, two important pieces of information are spoiled early. The first is that Fizban is Paladine (3rd book when Flint dies) and Kitiara is the Blue dragonflight's Dragonlord (2nd Book in Flotsam).

There went a piece of my childhood that will take a long time to heal. I'd say it's not worth the 90 minutes of your time, but feel free to try it and take your share of the pain.

So I saw Sweeney Todd yesterday. Unlike most I didn't go to see Depp, actually I went for Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman.  I loved the music and probably spent way too much time laughing.

I didn't expect Alan Rickman to sing. Not only did he sing, but he played the dirty old man. His toady, Timothy Spall just oozed sycophanty and administered a good beating or two.

Bonham Carter played the crazy practical woman. Very similar to Marla Singer actually.

Depp? Well his character only had two modes. Brood and Slay.

The only problem I actually had with the whole film was that it was hard to shake the feeling that I was watching Death Eaters: The Musical.

When non-computer people call tech support, this is exactly what they are thinking. Computers are strange, unknowable devices that do wondrous things, and whose innards are incomprehensible to any but the most learned.

When you have a computer problem, you have to call the local sorcerer to come over, speak his magic words over the machine (read command line outputs aloud or rattle off a lot of technical jargon and see if you don't sound like you're conjuring up a demon), and possibly use his mystical tools to perform an extended ritual. At the end, the evil spirits are purged, and the device once again functions as it should.

I've heard of people frightened and afraid to approach a server rack, convinced it was about to EXPLODE, because it was making a funny sound. When you don't have any idea how something works, a screwdriver and thumbdrive may as well be the exact same thing as a crucifix and an incense burner.
